In recent times the sea has eroded away the coastline at Robertshaven (ND389736) uncovering structures and middens. Excavation suggests that the area was an important estate with a bustling fishing station in late Norse times, sometime between the 10th and 14th centuries. Midden deposits were rich in fish-bones, shells and sherds of pottery. All have close parallels with the excavated Norse settlement at Freswick.
