Ousdale broch (ND072188) is the best-preserved broch in Caithness. The site was excavated towards the end of the 19th century and the site has been partly rebuilt since then. The broch interior is around 8m in diameter, surrounded by a 4m thick wall with galleries in the walls, guard cells and stairs. Due to the good state of preservation the scarcement, a stone ledge for supporting a wooden floor, still survives 2.5m above ground level. Excavation in the interior revealed evidence of drains and tanks. Outside the broch are several stone walls which may be buildings associated with use of the broch.
