During September students from Nottingham University and the local community surveyed and recorded some of the brochs around Sinclair's Bay. Brochs - large stone roundhouses built around 2000 years ago - are numerous in Caithness; the county has more brochs than any other area in Scotland. Many were investigated in the late 19th century by Sir Francis Tress Barry and a local man John Nicolson.

CAT's Archaeology Development Officer, Andy Heald, has been working on these brochs for a few years now. His hope is to re-survey and re-excavate a number of these sites over the coming years. Due to the growing size of the project Andy has been joined by Dr Jon Henderson (Nottingham University), Graeme Cavers (Nottingham University) and John Barber (AOC Archaeology Group).

This year work concentrated on two brochs: Nybster and Keiss Road. We are currently writing up the results and hope to publish a number of papers shortly. Once all the photographs are processed and figures drawn a larger report will appear on these pages.

Once again, CAT wish to record their enormous thanks to people who supported the project, particularly Alistair and Jean Sutherland and Tam Brown. The assistance of Historic Scotland and Caithness and Sutherland Enterprise is gratefully acknowledged.
