Key Sites

At Guidebest, Latheronwheel Burn (ND 181351) are the remains of a stone circle and a cairn. The stone circle is about 190 ft in diameter and represents one of the biggest stone circles in Scotland. Eight stones (seven standing) remain and probably five are missing. The stones are up to two metres high. There are other stones nearby but whether they are associated with the stone circle is now impossible to determine. The circle is situated within an archaeological landscape, illustrated well by the cairn lying just outside the ring. Two standing stones appear to intrude against the monument. There are other stones and cairns within the general monument area although it is difficult to be sure if they were built and used at the same time as the stone circle.
