The broch mound at Castlehill (ND194688) was re-used during the Viking period. In 1876 a group of workers broke through the grassy mound an uncovered the grave of a Viking woman. They also found two gold tortoise-shaped brooches, a jet arm-ring and a bone pin. The burial may date to the late 10th century. ( back to Vikings and Norse ) |
